SelectAhead of the Game is the most evidence-based youth sport mental health literacy programme in the world, having undergone several large controlled trials. The programme was first developed in The University of Wollongong in Australia. MAOTG programme includes content on how to recognise mental health disorders, what to do and when to get help. Athletes learn how to build resilience and overcome challenges in sport and life. The programme is effective because it uses sport to help participants acquire important skills and knowledge. The programme involves two sessions, one for the male and female youths and one for the parents and coaches. MAOTG helps parents and coaches understand and recognise mental health challenges in young people. Parents and coaches are encouraged to start a conversation about mental health, and the program raises awareness of where to go for help.
Our primary objective is to deliver the MAOTG mental health literacy program to male and female youths and adult parents and coaches in clubs across Ireland. The facilitator's of the programme are current and past inter county players. All facilitators have received training on the MAOTG programme and are also qualified mental health first aiders following training from Mental Health First Aid Ireland.
